ASUP Strike: Shekarau holds meeting with polytechnic lecturers

The new Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, on Thursday met with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP.
The polytechnic lecturers embarked on a strike on October 4, 2013 demanding for proper funding of polytechnics and an end to the discrimination of polytechnic graduates in the labour market, amongst other.
On Thursday, the president of ASUP, Chibuzor Asomugha, congratulated the new Minster on his appointment.
Mr. Asomugha, on behalf of the union, expressed its disappointment, having to welcome the new Minster into office while polytechnics were on strike.
“You have been part of education, a teacher at some point in time, and you were also addressed as a Chief Lecturer, which is also something related to polytechnics; so we know you have sympathy for our sector. We are happy that you are here and we say, “Congratulations and welcome.””
Mr, Asomugha told the minster that ASUP’s demands were the need for a constitution of the Governing Councils of Federal Polytechnics, the migration of the lower cadres on the CONTISS 15 salary scale, the release of the White Paper on the Visitations to Federal Polytechnics, and the need for the commencement of the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Polytechnics amongst others.
Mr Shekarau in return expressed his gratitude to the union, stating that he would have loved to be welcomed on a very happy note. He noted that polytechnics were very important in the society and therefore the issue of strike could not be ignored.

Luis Suarez closing in on £75m Barcelona move as Liverpool line up Swansea's Ben Davies

Luis Suárez is edging towards a £75 million move to Barcelona as Liverpool step up their own transfer activity by considering a £10 million bid for Swansea City’s Ben Davies.
Suárez’s exit from Anfield could be sealed in the next 48 hours after the two clubs agreed the final details on the deal, with the transfer held up while Fifa arranges a date for the appeal against the Uruguay striker’s four-month ban.
The Uruguayan Football Association’s appeal is likely to be heard this week, as it tries to reduce the suspension, and Suárez’s move to the Nou Camp will be pushed through after that.
Negotiations between Liverpool and Barcelona are highly advanced, and the only other delay has been over the schedule of payments, but the forward is expected to be presented by the Spanish giants in the next few days.
Brendan Rodgers, the Liverpool manager, is focusing on strengthening his squad regardless of Suárez’s imminent departure, and is expected to complete the signing of Serbian international Lazar Markovic on Thursday

Nigerian Football Federation suspended...Again

Four years after FIFA suspended the African nation due to government involvement, soccer's governing body has again banned Nigeria "on the account of government interference."
The decision comes after FIFA sent a letter to Nigeria expressing "concern after the NFF was served with court proceedings and consequently an order preventing the president of the NFF, the NFF executive committee members and the NFF congress from running the affairs of Nigerian football was granted by a high court of the Federal Republic of Nigeria."
In other words, the country's soccer teams were under government control.
In a statement, FIFA said the suspension will be lifted once the elected members of the NFF are back in control.
This isn't anything new for the Super Eagles.
Following defeat at the 2010 World Cup, Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan banned the country's national team from playing for two years, a penalty that was later rescinded.
The Super Eagles advanced from a 2014 World Cup group containing Argentina, Iran and Bosnia and Herzegovina before losing 2-0 to France in the second round.
Ahead of the tournament, the Nigerians were alleged to have fixed a friendly against Scotland -- the first of many accusation made toward African sides at this tournament.
Following a 4-0 loss to Croatia, the Cameroonian national team was accused of match-fixing in an article from German magazine Der Spiegel. Cameroon's players also briefly refused to board a plane before the tournament due to a dispute in player fees.
